Homemade Country Gravy

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons butter or bacon grease

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups milk

Salt, to taste

Ground black pepper, to taste

Optional: a pinch of cayenne pepper or dried herbs for added flavor

Instructions:

1️⃣ Melt the Fat: In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter or bacon grease over medium heat.

2️⃣ Make the Roux: Add the flour to the melted fat. Stir constantly with a whisk or wooden spoon, cooking the mixture for about 2 minutes until it turns a light brown color.

3️⃣ Gradually Add Milk: Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Keep whisking until the mixture is smooth.

4️⃣ Season the Gravy: Add salt and ground black pepper to taste. For extra flavor, you can also add a pinch of cayenne pepper or your choice of dried herbs.

5️⃣ Simmer to Thicken: Continue to cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens to your desired consistency. This usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

6️⃣ Adjust and Serve: Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve the gravy hot with your favorite dishes like biscuits, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, or over breakfast items.

Enjoy your homemade country gravy!
