Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe


2 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced

1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups milk

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

1 small onion, finely chopped

Optional: Fresh parsley or chives for garnish


Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Prepare White Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Cook and stir until the mixture thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Add Cheese: Remove the sauce from heat and stir in 1 1/2 cups of the cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

Layer Potatoes and Sauce: Arrange a layer of potatoes in the prepared baking dish, followed by a layer of chopped onions. Pour some of the cheese sauce over the top. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cheese sauce.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Final Touch: Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheese over the top and return to the oven until the cheese melts, about 5 minutes.

Garnish and Serve: Garnish with chopped parsley or chives, if desired. Serve hot.
